Why not use ubuntu: D

This comment is reference a problem is with security with Debian (and Ubuntu inherited). Yes, I know you will say that as the problem is Debian, since Ubuntu is not to blame. I do not see it, and for one simple reason: Red Hat eg kernel putting in their distribution is a kernel patched things especially for them by correcting the official kernel. Ie, Red Hat cares what it distributes. Ubuntu makes a lot of marketing to be one of the best and safest, but the only thing he did was to "create an installer, and change the default theme for gnome?

not want to get into an argument, because Ubuntu has a lot of great stuff, and maybe some distributions should learn about her, but that does not make a marketing free advertising too, given the ownership of new features in the world GNU / Linux , it appears that there are other distributions that you have some time, or are they simply improvements has given to update the Gnome desktop.

A new monopoly?

And we have become a reality Ubuntu is currently the most widely used distribution , to the point of almost becoming a monopoly in the field of Linux, is what I think, already all know the "big" Microsoft software with its huge monopoly, and their eagerness to attack GNU / Linux ... Ubuntu

is considered one of the best distros now, and although there are literally hundreds of distributions (over 500 at last count of DistroWatch ), only a handful have real relevance, and of those 5 or 6 large distributions clearly highlights the solution created by Canonical, which has already "won" the hearts of millions of users.

remember that one of the pillars of GNU / Linux and free software is the variety of options to choose from, and if Ubuntu in which case the only reference becomes noticeable or only option in the Linux world, everything is coming looks bad ... very bad ...

Now let another point. The number of users running Ubuntu as their first distribution is made by one of the following reasons:

  • found a video on YouTube, where they see a colorful and impressive graphical interface (Beryl, Compiz, XGL) and were shocked by Tal Ubuntu Rotating Cube.
  • They learned that without more ado, send you CDs for free to your home .
  • is one of the few that is designed for beginners, and people who have not used any distro in your life.
  • are tired of Windows and want to use a better operating system, free, secure, and to be free. And want to learn and fill knowledge.

Of the four options mentioned above, unfortunately the latter is the least likely. Starting with that freedom does not matter to us all, so do not come to that they use Ubuntu because it is free (yes, in principle it is), and if I think: click here and here, the truth not enough to OGG or with free video formats, or ... how can we fail to see this beautiful collection of videos that cost me when I used to collect both Windows? And we care much less for my nVidia drivers are not free, because the only thing was to install Ubuntu install that so nice they call Beryl or Compiz Fusion.

Sorry if anyone felt alluded to, but I repeat: it is my opinion. Ending: Canonical has done a good job on their part, making more and more users go from Windows to Ubuntu (at least try) ... unfortunately all these users, very few truly understand the meaning of GNU / Linux.
